Mercury Used In Gold Mining

2020-11-17

Mercury,  has the lowest melting point of all metals, at -38.87℃. It is also the only metal that is liquid and flows easily at room temperature. It has a jelly-like texture.

Specific gravity 13.595, vapor specific gravity 6.9. Its chemical symbol comes from Latin, meaning "liquid silver".

The amalgamation method can be divided into inner amalgamation and outer amalgamation according to its production mode. Amalgamation of gold and heavy placer minerals is widely used in placer mines.

In Pulse gold mine, mercury mixing is usually used as part of the combined process in conjunction with flotation, gravity separation, cyanidation, etc., mainly to capture coarse gold monomers.

The inner mixing of mercury is carried out in a mercury mixing cylinder or a grinding machine, which can control the pollution of mercury.

The main equipment for external amalgamation is mercury-mixing plate, which is composed of bracket, bed surface and mercury-mixing plate.

The amalgam board material has violet copper board, silver-plated copper board, pure silver board and so on, the amalgam effect of silver-plated copper board is best.

For the convenience of silver plating and production replacement, the electrolytic copper plate is often cut into 400-600mm wide and 800-1200mm long small pieces, after silver plating, according to the inclined direction of the support laid on the bed.

The determination of the area of the mercury plate is related to the amount of ore treated, the properties of ore and the role of amalgamation in the gold preparation process.

In general, the mercury plate area required to process 1 ton of ore is 0.05-0.5 m/ton/day at a slurry flow depth of 5-8 mm on the mercury plate surface and a flow rate of 0.5-0.7 m/s.

If the amalgamation is only for the capture of large particles of free gold, when the tailings still need to be floatated, reprocessed or cyanated, the mercury plate quota can be set at 0.1-0.2 m/ton/day.

The mercury plates under various conditions are listed in table 9-3-1.

Mercury-mixing operating conditions: feed concentration 10-25%, feed particle size 3-0.4 mm, slurry flow rate 0.5-0.7 m/s. Mercury consumption is 3-8 g/t.

Mercury protection: Mercury can be ingested through the skin, mucous membranes, or respiratory tract in the form of liquids, salts, and vapors.

Mercury can accumulate in the kidneys, liver, brain, lungs, bones and other organs and cause poisoning. In particular, mercury vapor is the most harmful to people, which can cause acute or chronic poisoning. China stipulates that the mercury content in the air shall not exceed 0.01-0.02 mg/m3, and the maximum allowable concentration of mercury and its compounds in industrial wastewater is 0.05 mg/l.
